Free head and neck cancer exams

Tuesday, April 4, 2017
5 to 7 pm
Sarah Bush Lincoln Ear, Nose and Throat Physician Lori Cudone, MD, Dentist Marlee Hansen, DDS, and Keith Ballinger, PA-C, will offer free head and neck cancer exams to the public from 5 to 7 pm on Tuesday, April 4; and from 7:30 to 11:30 am on Saturday, April 8, at SBL’s ENT Clinic in Mattoon. Drs. Cudone and Hansen, Ballinger and associates will perform a screening exam to check for head and neck cancers, including cancers of the nasal cavity, sinuses, lips, mouth, salivary glands, throat, or larynx (voice box).  April 2 to 9 has been designated nationally as Oral, Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week. Given the rise in oral cancers related to human papillomavirus (HPV), screening for early detection of this disease is more than important than ever. The fastest rising types of these cancers are mouth and throat cancer, which account for more than 40,000 cases per year in the U.S. Head and neck cancers account for approximately three percent of all diagnosed cancers in the country. Risk factors for this type of cancer are age, smoking, chewing tobacco, use of alcohol, poor nutrition and the HPV virus. Early detection of suspicious areas in the mouth and tongue can be done routinely at regular dental office visits and by a family doctor. For more information or to make an appointment for a free cancer exam, call the SBL ENT Clinic at (217) 258-2409. The clinic is located at 1000 Health Center Drive, Suite 401, Mattoon. Read more

Orthopedic Lunch & Learn

Wednesday, April 19, 2017
11 am to 12:30 pm
Sarah Bush Lincoln Orthopedic Surgeon James Kohlmann, MD, is hosting a lunch and learn event to help people understand the anterior hip approach technique used in hip replacement operations. The free lunch and learn program is set for 11 am to 12:30 pm Wednesday, April 19, at the Lifespan Center, just north of Sarah Bush Lincoln. Lunch will include broccoli and cheese stuffed chicken breast, twice baked potato casserole, Italian green beans, dinner rolls and cookies. Other program participants include Sarah Bush Lincoln’s joint camp coordinator, a program for people considering a joint replacement; Center for Healthy Living, Physical Therapy and Lincolnland Home Medical Equipment. Dr. Kohlmann explained that while there are a few surgical techniques used to replace a total hip joint, he finds that using the anterior approach promotes an earlier and easier recovery with less muscle trauma and less pain. “Using the anterior approach allows me to do the surgery through a smaller incision. The cut is in the front of the hip rather than in the side or back, like in traditional hip replacements,” Dr. Kohlmann said. He explained that before someone undergoes a hip replacement, they might want to try medicine for pain or inflammation, walking aids, and physical therapy. If people continue to have pain and have a hard time getting around, hip replacement surgery may be an option. Dr. Kohlmann cares for people at SBL Orthopedics & Sports Medicine at Prairie Pavilion 2, 1004 Health Center Dr. Suite 100. He can be reached at 217 238-3435.
